  • Week 16

    SDC10284

I think this is my best use of typography from this semester.  I love the fact that it was hand-rendered and I think it went along with the theme really well.  This photo was taken on 11/30/08 around 9:00pm, from my portfolio.  The type is very unique, somewhat sloppy, but readable at the same time.  It captures the design element as well as some things I have learned about typography.

Blow Pop lollipop's packaging had the most interesting type than any other food I consumed this week.  I just noticed it on 11/30/08 around 9:00pm.  I love the "bubble" style lettering.  No other type of food could pull off this kind of type.  It works for its purpose and looks like each individual letter is an actual bubble.

    SDC10279

This example of when "good type goes bad" was also found in TeenVogue on 11/30/08 around 8:00pm.  I have no idea what this ad is really for, maybe something you can get sent to your phone.  All I do know is that the ad is very cheesy and kiddish.  I do not like the gradient mesh used on the bright purple and pink type, or the green drop shadow.  The informal style font used in all lowercases just makes it look it is for something very cheap and basically not worth your time.

This good use of a ligature was found in TeenVogue on 11/30/08 around 8:00pm.  Sorry it is hard to see, but the LL and A are all connected.  Due to the close kerning of the logo I think that the ligature really helps the type flow much better than if those letters were not connected.  The capital letter L is hard to make it look like there is an even amount of space, so I definitely think making those a ligature was the right move.

  • Week 13

    SDC10144

This type used as art was found in Elle magazine on November 19, 2008 around 10 oclock pm.  I love how the type is layered and looks raised.  The pink background of it resembles tape by the way it is layed down.  I think it is very effective because it is the regular Juicy Couture lettering that they always use in their logos but they took a different approach to make it stand out.  Most of the ads had their simple type in the bottom corner or displayed simply in the center of the page.
